About the Breed
Origin and History
The Aegean (Aegean cat) is a native breed that developed over centuries through natural selection on the islands of the Aegean Sea, especially Greece's Cyclades. Since it is not the product of any artificial breeding program, it is regarded as a "natural breed." It lived side by side with people in the fishing harbors and villages of the islands, which made it a sociable and adaptable cat. It is considered Greece's only native breed.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, muscular and well-balanced body. Its semi-long, water-repellent coat is usually bicolor or tricolor and always includes white areas. Its sturdy, athletic build reflects its development under natural living conditions.
Personality and Temperament
The Aegean is a sociable, intelligent and people-oriented cat. Because of its historical bond with fishermen in the harbors, it may show an interest in water and fish. It is active, curious and playful, and at the same time adapts easily to family life and other animals. It can be talkative and loves interacting with its owner.
Care and Nutrition
Its semi-long coat stays healthy with brushing once or twice a week; since the undercoat is not dense, grooming is relatively easy. As a natural and hardy breed, it has no special requirements. A balanced diet and regular play are enough.
Health
Breeds that developed through natural selection generally have a robust genetic makeup, and the Aegean is one of them. It has no known serious breed-specific hereditary disease and is considered hardy in this respect. Still, as with all cats, regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, parasite protection and a balanced diet are important for a long and healthy life.
Who Is It Best For?
The Aegean is ideal for individuals and families looking for a sociable, adaptable and hardy cat that needs little maintenance. Because of its active nature, it is happiest in homes that can offer it play and interaction.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
