Affenpinscher

Origin and History

The Affenpinscher is an old toy breed developed in Germany to hunt rodents. Its name means "monkey (Affe) pinscher" in German and comes from its characteristic monkey-like facial expression. Over time it became a charming companion dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, compact body with an upright stance. Its harsh, shaggy, wiry coat of medium length gives it its "monkey" look; it is usually black. The hair on its face creates a highly expressive look.

Personality and Temperament

The Affenpinscher is bold, curious and devoted to its owner. Despite its small size, it is self-confident and fearless; it is a good watchdog and prone to barking. With its playful, clever and comical character, it is known as a "clown dog". It is affectionate with its family and wary of strangers.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its wiry coat should be brushed several times a week and periodically hand-stripped. A moderate amount of exercise is enough. Because of its stubborn streak, patient, reward-based and early training is important.

Health

It is generally a robust breed. Kneecap dislocation (patellar luxation), a hip joint condition (Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease) and breathing sensitivity related to its slightly flat face may occur. Regular veterinary and dental check-ups are recommended. The Affenpinscher suits individuals and families looking for a bold, playful and affectionate small companion who can balance its tendency to bark through training.
