About the Breed
Origin and History
The Afghan Hound is an ancient sighthound developed in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan for hunting and speed over rough terrain. It is a hardy, agile breed that hunts by sight; its long coat, which protects against the cold, developed in this landscape.
Appearance and Coat
It has a long-legged, slender and elegant body with a noble bearing. Its most distinctive feature is its silky, flowing long coat, which needs regular grooming. Its build is aerodynamic, made for speed.
Personality and Temperament
The Afghan Hound is independent, dignified and calm. It is attached to its owner but has an aloof, cat-like character; it is not overly obedient. It has a strong prey drive and tends to chase moving things. It is sensitive and does not respond well to harsh training.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its silky long coat needs regular (frequent) brushing and bathing; this is its biggest grooming commitment. As a sighthound it needs daily off-leash running, but because of its strong prey drive a safe, fenced area is essential. Its independent nature calls for patient training.
Health
It is generally healthy. Typical of sighthounds, it may show sensitivity to anesthesia (due to low body fat), cataracts and, rarely, hereditary myelopathy. Care should be taken to avoid tail/joint injuries. The Afghan Hound suits owners looking for an elegant, independent and calm dog who can devote time to regular coat care and a safe running area.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
