About the Breed
Origin and History
The Airedale Terrier, developed in England's Aire Valley for hunting otters and rodents, is the largest terrier breed, which is why it is called the "King of Terriers". Thanks to its versatility, it has also served as a messenger in wartime, a police dog and a hunting dog.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular body with an upright stance. It has a harsh, wiry, wavy outer coat of medium length and a soft undercoat; the classic color is black and tan (saddle pattern). It sheds little but needs regular grooming.
Personality and Temperament
The Airedale is intelligent, self-confident and friendly. It is bold and energetic; it has typical terrier determination but is trainable and adaptable. It is attached to its family, playful with children and wary of strangers. It needs mental stimulation and gets into mischief when bored.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its wiry coat needs weekly brushing and periodic hand-stripping. Because of its high energy, plenty of exercise and mental stimulation are a must. It is intelligent but has an independent side; consistent, reward-based and early training is important.
Health
It is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, gastric torsion (GDV) and skin allergies may occur. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended. The Airedale suits families looking for an active, intelligent and versatile dog who can devote exercise, training and time to it.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
