About the Breed

Origin and History

The American Bobtail was developed in the United States in the 1960s from cats naturally born with short tails. The short tail is the result of a spontaneous dominant gene mutation and is the defining feature that gives the breed its name. Its look, reminiscent of a wild bobcat, is combined with a fully domestic and warm-hearted temperament.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-large, muscular and athletic body. Its most characteristic feature is its short, natural tail, about one third the length of a normal tail; the length can vary slightly from cat to cat. There are both shorthaired and semi-longhaired varieties; the coat is dense and soft. Ear tufts and a hunter's gaze give it a wild air.

Personality and Temperament

The American Bobtail is extremely friendly, loyal and devoted to people; it is often described as "dog-like." It can learn to walk on a leash and play fetch, and it loves following its family around the house. It has a calm yet playful balance; because it adapts easily to new environments and travel, it is also chosen as a therapy cat. It gets along well with children and other pets.

Care and Nutrition

Depending on coat length, brushing once or twice a week is enough; slightly more frequent brushing is recommended for semi-longhaired cats. Plenty of play, climbing space and a balanced diet suit its athletic build.

Health

The American Bobtail's short tail is based on a different genetic mechanism from the taillessness gene of the Manx; for this reason it is not predisposed to the spinal and nerve problems seen in the Manx to the same degree and is generally considered robust. Still, because of the natural tail structure, some cats may show slight variations in the tail vertebrae. Regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations and a balanced diet are recommended for a healthy life.

Who Is It Best For?

The American Bobtail is ideal for families looking for a loyal, adaptable and interactive companion, homes with children and even owners who travel. With its dog-like nature, it offers an active yet balanced housemate.
