About the Breed

Origin and History

The American Curl's story begins in California in 1981 with "Shulamith," a stray cat whose ears curled backward. This spontaneous genetic trait was preserved through selective breeding, and the breed was developed. The characteristic curled ears are determined by a dominant gene.

Appearance and Coat

Its most distinctive feature is its ears that curl backward and outward. Kittens are born with straight ears; the ears begin to curl in the first days and take their final shape at about 4 months of age. It has a medium-sized, well-balanced body, and there are both shorthaired and semi-longhaired varieties. Its silky coat with little undercoat makes grooming easy.

Personality and Temperament

The American Curl is affectionate, playful and very attached to people. Because it keeps its kitten energy even into adulthood, it is called the "Peter Pan of cats." It loves following its owner, riding on shoulders and interacting; with its gentle, adaptable nature it gets along well with children and other animals. It is usually quiet and expresses its needs with soft sounds.

Care and Nutrition

Its silky coat stays healthy with brushing once or twice a week. Because the cartilage of the curled ears is firm, it is important to clean the ears gently and regularly and not to bend them too much. A balanced diet and regular play are enough.

Health

An important point: the curled-ear gene of the American Curl is different from that of the Scottish Fold and has not been linked to any disorder that adversely affects cartilage/joint development. For this reason the breed is generally considered robust and does not carry the risk of osteochondrodysplasia seen in the Scottish Fold. Still, because of the curled ear structure, attention should be paid to ear hygiene, and regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet should be provided.

Who Is It Best For?

The American Curl is ideal for individuals, families and homes with children looking for an affectionate, playful and people-loving cat. It may come across as too attention-seeking for those looking for an independent, aloof cat.
