About the Breed
Origin and History
The American Shorthair descends from hard-working cats brought to America with the first European settlers, where they served as mousers on ships. This origin gave the breed a strong hunting instinct, endurance and a sturdy constitution. Standardized through selective breeding in the 20th century, it became one of America's most established native breeds.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-large, muscular and well-balanced body. Its thick, dense short coat protects it against the weather. It comes in many colors and patterns; the best known is the black "classic tabby" (marbled) pattern on a silver background. With its round face and full cheeks, it has a healthy, robust appearance.
Personality and Temperament
It has a balanced, easygoing and calm temperament. It is attached to its owner but not overly demanding; it strikes a healthy balance between play and rest. Because it can keep its independence, it also copes well with hours spent alone. Its hunting instinct is strong and it enjoys hunting games. It gets along well with children and other pets.
Care and Nutrition
Its thick short coat should be brushed once or twice a week to keep shedding in check, especially during seasonal changes. Since its calm nature can lead to a tendency toward obesity, portion control and regular play are important for weight balance.
Health
The American Shorthair is a hardy breed known for its long lifespan (15-17 years on average). Still, some cats may develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which involves thickening of the heart muscle; regular echocardiography screening is recommended. Thanks to its generally robust genetics, its burden of serious hereditary disease is low. A balanced diet and ideal weight are key to maintaining its health.
Who Is It Best For?
The American Shorthair is ideal for families looking for a balanced, robust, low-maintenance cat, first-time cat owners and busy working individuals. With its adaptable nature, it fits in with almost any lifestyle.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
