About the Breed
Origin and History
The American Wirehair appeared in 1966 on a farm in New York, when a kitten was born with a stiff, crimped coat as the result of a spontaneous gene mutation. The breed was standardized by developing this mutation on an American Shorthair foundation. It is one of the rarest cat breeds in the world and is bred mainly in America.
Appearance and Coat
Its most distinctive feature is its unique coat, in which each hair is crimped to create a stiff, wire-like texture; even its whiskers may be curly. This makes the breed recognizable by touch. It has a medium-large, muscular and well-balanced body, showing a sturdy build similar to the American Shorthair.
Personality and Temperament
It has an affectionate, calm and easygoing temperament. It is attached to its owner and playful but not overly demanding; it is a balanced, relaxed housemate. Its hunting instinct is well developed and it enjoys games. It is a family-oriented cat that gets along well with children and other animals.
Care and Nutrition
Because its wiry coat is delicate, over-brushing should be avoided; gentle, infrequent grooming is recommended so as not to damage the coat structure. For cats with oily skin, an occasional bath can be helpful. A balanced diet and regular play are enough.
Health
Since it was developed from an American Shorthair foundation, it is generally a robust and hardy breed and has no known serious breed-specific hereditary disease. Because of its wiry coat, some cats may experience skin sensitivity or mild irritation, so monitoring skin health is recommended. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are important for a healthy life.
Who Is It Best For?
The American Wirehair is ideal for individuals and families looking for an unusual-looking, hardy and balanced cat. As it is a rare breed, those wishing to adopt one may need to be patient.
