About the Breed
Origin and History
The Appenzeller Sennenhund is one of the four Swiss mountain dogs, developed in the Swiss Alps for herding, driving cattle and guarding farms. It is an agile, hardy and versatile working dog.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, muscular and agile body. Its short, dense, glossy double coat comes in a characteristic tricolor (black/brown/white) pattern. It sheds moderately.
Personality and Temperament
The Appenzeller is energetic, intelligent and loyal to its family. It has strong guarding and herding instincts; it is alert and prone to barking, making it a good watchdog. It is eager to work, athletic and self-confident, and wary of strangers.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. It has very high exercise needs and needs a "job"; mental stimulation is a must. It is intelligent and requires early socialization and consistent training.
Health
It is generally a hardy breed. Hip/elbow dysplasia and some eye problems may occur. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended. The Appenzeller suits active owners looking for an active, hard-working and loyal dog who can give it plenty of exercise, tasks and space; it is not suited to a sedentary lifestyle.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
