About the Breed

Origin and History

The Arabian Mau is a natural breed descended from street cats that have lived naturally in the desert regions of the Arabian Peninsula for thousands of years. It developed in the Gulf countries, especially the United Arab Emirates, and acquired a hardy constitution able to survive the harsh desert climate. Although it is a relatively recently recognized breed, its origins go back a very long way.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-large, muscular and athletic body. Its short coat with no undercoat developed to keep it cool in the hot desert climate. Its long legs and agile build make it a fast and skilled hunter. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns.

Personality and Temperament

The Arabian Mau is intelligent, loyal and attached to people. With its active and curious nature, it enjoys playing and satisfying its hunting instinct. It bonds strongly with its owner and adapts to family life and other animals. At the same time, with the independent and resilient character inherited from desert life, it can also spend time on its own. It can be communicative and expresses its needs vocally.

Care and Nutrition

Its short coat without undercoat makes grooming extremely easy; brushing once a week is enough. Thanks to its hardy nature, it has no special requirements. Plenty of play, climbing space and a balanced diet are recommended to support its active nature.

Health

Having developed through natural selection in desert conditions has given the Arabian Mau a robust genetic makeup. It has no known serious breed-specific hereditary disease and in this respect is considered one of the hardiest natural breeds. As with all cats, regular vaccinations, parasite protection, dental care and veterinary check-ups are important for a long life.

Who Is It Best For?

The Arabian Mau is ideal for individuals and families looking for a hardy, loyal, low-maintenance and active cat. Because of its energetic nature, it is happiest in homes that can offer it play and interaction.
