About the Breed
Origin and History
The Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) is a hardy herding dog developed to drive cattle across Australia's vast lands, and it also carries dingo ancestry. It is known for directing cattle by nipping at their heels ("heel").
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, muscular and extremely athletic body. Its short, dense, weather-resistant double coat is speckled blue ("blue") or red ("red"). It sheds moderately.
Personality and Temperament
The Cattle Dog is extremely intelligent, energetic and loyal. It bonds strongly with its owner and constantly wants a "job". Because of its strong herding instinct, it may tend to herd/nip at the heels of moving things. It is alert, tough and wary of strangers.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. It has very high exercise and mental stimulation needs; it requires long daily activity and tasks. Thanks to its exceptional intelligence, it is very receptive to training and ideal for dog sports.
Health
It is generally hardy. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — a DNA test is available), hereditary deafness and hip dysplasia may occur. Regular eye and hearing check-ups are recommended. The Australian Cattle Dog suits experienced owners looking for a very active, work-driven dog who can provide intensive exercise and tasks.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
