About the Breed
Origin and History
The Australian Terrier, developed in Australia, is one of the first native terrier breeds and was used for hunting snakes and rodents and as a watchdog. Despite its small size, it has a tough, hard-working character.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, slightly long-bodied frame with an upright stance. It has a harsh, wiry outer coat of medium length and a soft undercoat; it comes in blue and tan or sandy colors. It sheds little.
Personality and Temperament
The Australian Terrier is self-confident, lively and loyal. It has typical terrier courage; it is alert and a good watchdog. It is devoted to its family, playful and friendly, with a strong prey drive. It is intelligent and more trainable than other small breeds.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its wiry coat should be brushed several times a week; it sheds little. A moderate amount of exercise and play is enough. It is intelligent and responds well to reward-based training; early socialization helps balance its tendency to bark and hunt.
Health
It is generally healthy. Kneecap dislocation (patellar luxation), a hip joint condition, diabetes and allergies may occur. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended. The Australian Terrier suits individuals and families looking for a loyal, brave and adaptable small dog.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
