Basset Hound

Origin and History

The Basset Hound is a scent hound developed in France for slow but persistent hunting by following scent. Its short legs keep its nose close to the ground as it tracks; its sense of smell is among the strongest of all dogs.

Appearance and Coat

It has a long body, short legs and a heavy-boned frame. It is recognized by its very long ears, loose skin folds and soulful expression. Its short, dense coat is easy to care for but sheds moderately.

Temperament and Personality

The Basset Hound is calm, affectionate and patient; it gets along very well with families and children. It has a stubborn, independent streak; once it catches a scent, its attention is completely diverted. It is a low-energy, easygoing housemate and is known for its deep-voiced "howls."

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for, but its long ears and skin folds are prone to infection and should be cleaned regularly. Low-to-moderate exercise is enough; because it is prone to obesity, portion control and protecting the spine are important. Its stubborn nature calls for patient training.

Health

Because of its long body, back/disc herniation (IVDD) and obesity are the main concerns. Ear infections, eyelid problems (glaucoma, cherry eye) and gastric torsion (GDV) may also occur. Regular ear/eye care and weight monitoring are recommended. The Basset Hound suits families looking for a calm, affectionate and friendly dog.
