About the Breed

Origin and History

The Bedlington Terrier is a terrier used by miners in England for hunting rodents and for racing. It is known for its unique lamb-like appearance, but beneath this gentle look lies a fast and fearless hunter.

Appearance and Coat

It has a graceful body with an arched back and long legs. Its most distinctive feature is its soft, curly, low-shedding coat that feels like lamb's wool; with its characteristic trim it looks like a sheep. It comes in blue, sandy or liver.

Temperament and Personality

The Bedlington is lively, self-confident and affectionate. It is gentle and calm indoors, energetic and brave outdoors. It is a companion devoted to its family that gets along well with children; its prey drive is strong. It is intelligent and more trainable than other terriers.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its curly coat needs regular brushing to prevent matting and a trim every 6-8 weeks; because it sheds little, it is better tolerated by some people with allergies. It needs moderate-to-high exercise. It is intelligent and responsive to reward-based training.

Health

The scientifically well-defined hereditary disease in the Bedlington is copper toxicosis, which causes excessive copper accumulation in the liver; a DNA test is available for it. Kneecap luxation and eye problems may also occur. Copper screening and regular check-ups are recommended. The Bedlington suits families looking for a low-shedding, graceful and affectionate dog.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
