Bernese Mountain Dog

Origin and History

The Bernese Mountain Dog (Berner Sennenhund) is one of the four Swiss mountain dogs, used in the Swiss Alps for draft work, herding and guarding farms. Strong yet gentle, it is both a hard worker and an affectionate companion.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and powerful body. Its most distinctive feature is its silky, thick and long coat in the characteristic tricolor (black/brown/white). It is cold-tolerant and sheds heavily.

Temperament and Personality

The Bernese is extremely gentle, affectionate and calm. It is very devoted to its family, gets along wonderfully with children and is patient. It loves people and does not like being left alone. It has a calm yet hardworking, friendly and balanced character.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its long coat should be brushed several times a week to prevent tangles; it sheds heavily. It needs moderate exercise, but excessive exertion should be avoided during puppyhood for healthy joint development. It is intelligent and responds well to gentle training.

Health

In the Bernese, cancer (histiocytic sarcoma) is relatively common and is the main reason for its short lifespan. Hip/elbow dysplasia and gastric torsion (GDV) may also occur. Responsible breeders screen joints; regular vet check-ups are important. The Bernese suits families looking for a gentle, affectionate giant family dog who can devote time to coat care and health monitoring.
