About the Breed

Origin and History

The Bichon Frise is a small companion dog of Mediterranean origin that became popular among the nobility in France and Spain. Beloved for centuries as a lap dog for its cheerful personality and charming looks, it also once appeared in circuses as a performing dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, compact and charming body. Its most distinctive feature is its soft, curly white coat that resembles a cotton ball; it sheds very little and spreads fewer allergens. With its characteristic rounded trim it takes on a "toy-like" look.

Temperament and Personality

The Bichon Frise is cheerful, affectionate and extremely sociable. It loves people, enjoys attention and does not like being left alone. It is playful, adaptable and friendly, getting along well with children and other animals. It is intelligent and receptive to training.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its curly coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting and professional grooming every 4-6 weeks; this is the biggest care commitment. Moderate exercise is enough. House-training may take patience; reward-based training is recommended.

Health

It is generally robust. Skin allergies, kneecap luxation (patellar luxation), bladder stones, dental disease and cataracts may occur. Regular dental and skin care is recommended. The Bichon Frise suits individuals and families looking for an affectionate, cheerful, low-shedding small companion who can devote time to regular coat care.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
