About the Breed
Origin and History
Blenheim Spaniel is the name given to the chestnut-and-white (Blenheim) variety, the best-known color of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Developed in England as an aristocratic companion dog, it takes its name from Blenheim Palace.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, elegant and well-balanced body with large, expressive eyes. Its silky, medium-long, slightly wavy coat forms abundant "feathering" on the ears and legs; in the Blenheim color it has chestnut markings on a white ground.
Temperament and Personality
The Blenheim Spaniel is extremely affectionate, gentle and sociable. It loves people, enjoys being held and constant closeness, and does not like being left alone. It gets along wonderfully with children and other animals; it is a docile, adaptable companion.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its silky coat should be brushed several times a week, and the area around the ears checked for tangles. Moderate-to-low exercise is enough. It loves to please and responds well to gentle, reward-based training.
Health
The most important hereditary disease in this breed is mitral valve disease (MVD), which affects the heart; it is common in the breed and regular heart screening is critical. Syringomyelia, related to the brain/spinal cord, hip dysplasia and eye problems may also occur. The Blenheim Spaniel is ideal for families looking for an affectionate, docile, cuddly dog; health-screened lines should be preferred.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
