About the Breed
Origin and History
The Bloodhound is a dog developed in and around Belgium with an unmatched talent for scent tracking. Thanks to a sense of smell that can follow trails left days earlier, it is used in search and rescue and forensic tracking; it is one of the rare breeds whose trailing is accepted as evidence in court.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, heavy-boned body, very long ears and characteristic loose skin folds. These folds and long ears channel scent toward its nose. Its short, hard coat is easy to care for; it tends to drool.
Temperament and Personality
The Bloodhound is gentle, patient and affectionate; it gets along very well with families and children. Once it catches a scent it is persistent and independent, and getting its attention becomes difficult. It is a calm housemate but a determined tracker outdoors.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to care for, but the ears and skin folds should be cleaned regularly to prevent infection. It needs plenty of exercise and scent games; a secure, fenced area is essential because of its strong scent drive. Its stubborn nature calls for patient training.
Health
Because of its deep chest, gastric torsion (GDV/bloat) is a serious and high risk in the Bloodhound; splitting meals is recommended. Hip/elbow dysplasia, ear infections and eyelid problems may also occur. The Bloodhound suits families looking for a gentle, patient and determined dog who can provide a secure space and regular care.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
