About the Breed

Origin and History

The Bluetick Coonhound is a scent hound developed in America to hunt raccoons and other game through the night by following scent. It is a hardy, determined tracker with a powerful voice.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and athletic body. Its most distinctive feature is its short, dense coat, which gives it a dark blue mottled ("bluetick") look. It is easy to care for and sheds little.

Temperament and Personality

The Bluetick is energetic, friendly and loyal. It has a strong scent drive and a determined nature; once it picks up a trail it is resolute. It is devoted to its family and friendly, but has an independent streak. It is known for its characteristic deep voice called a "bawl" and tends to bark/howl.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for; its ears should be cleaned regularly. It needs a very high level of exercise and scent stimulation; a secure, fenced area is essential because of its strong prey drive. Its independent nature calls for patient, reward-based training.

Health

It is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia, ear infections, gastric torsion (GDV) and eye problems may occur. Regular ear care and vet check-ups are recommended. The Bluetick suits active owners looking for an active, determined and friendly hunting/companion dog who can provide plenty of exercise and space.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
