About the Breed

Origin and History

The Border Collie is a herding dog developed in the England-Scotland border region to herd sheep, and is considered the most intelligent dog breed in the world. It controls the flock with its characteristic "eye" technique; its work ethic and ability to learn are legendary.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, athletic and agile body. Its double coat can be short (smooth) or medium-long (rough) and comes in many colors and patterns. It sheds moderately.

Temperament and Personality

The Border Collie is extraordinarily intelligent, energetic and focused. It constantly needs a "job" and mental stimulation; without them it gets bored and develops obsessive/destructive behaviors. Because of its strong herding instinct it tends to herd anything that moves. It is extremely devoted and sensitive to its owner.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its double coat should be brushed several times a week. It has very high exercise and mental stimulation needs; long daily activity and training games are a must. Thanks to its extraordinary intelligence it learns everything quickly; it is ideal for dog sports (agility, obedience).

Health

Some hereditary conditions in the Border Collie can be screened with DNA tests: collie eye anomaly (CEA), trapped neutrophil syndrome (TNS) and, in some individuals, MDR1 drug sensitivity. Hip dysplasia and epilepsy may also occur. Responsible breeding and DNA screening are important. The Border Collie suits experienced, active owners looking for a very active, intelligent dog eager to work; it is definitely not suited to a sedentary lifestyle.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
