Border Terrier

Origin and History

The Border Terrier was developed in the England-Scotland border region as a hardy, agile working terrier that could run alongside horses on fox hunts. With its understated looks and balanced temperament, it is considered one of the most adaptable terriers.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, athletic and sturdy body and an otter-like head. It has a harsh, wiry, medium-length outer coat and a soft undercoat; it sheds little. It comes in red, blue-and-tan or wheaten.

Temperament and Personality

The Border Terrier is friendly, brave and adaptable. It is calmer and more trainable than other terriers; it is a companion devoted to its family that gets along well with children. Its prey drive is strong and it is energetic. It loves to please, which makes it an easy-to-train terrier.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its wiry coat is maintained with weekly brushing and periodic hand-stripping; it sheds little. It needs moderate-to-high exercise. It is intelligent and adaptable, responds well to reward-based training, and early socialization balances its hunting tendencies.

Health

It is generally healthy and hardy. A breed-specific hereditary condition, canine epileptoid cramping syndrome (CECS / "Spike's disease"), may occur; hip dysplasia and heart problems have also been reported. Regular vet check-ups are recommended. The Border Terrier is ideal for families and households with children looking for a friendly, adaptable and active dog.
