About the Breed

Origin and History

The Boston Terrier was developed in America from bulldog and terrier lines and is one of the first breeds of US origin. Because of its tuxedo-like color pattern and courteous manners, it is known as the "American Gentleman."

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, compact and muscular body, large erect ears and a flat (brachycephalic) face. Its short, glossy coat has a tuxedo pattern; it is easy to care for and sheds little.

Temperament and Personality

The Boston Terrier is friendly, intelligent and affectionate. It loves people, barks little and is well suited to apartments. It has a playful yet balanced temperament; it is an adaptable companion that gets along well with children and other animals.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for. Moderate-to-low exercise is enough, but care should be taken in extreme heat because of its flat face. It is intelligent and loves to please; it responds well to reward-based training.

Health

Because of its flat face, brachycephalic breathing problems (BOAS) and heat sensitivity may occur. Eye problems (corneal ulcers, cherry eye, cataracts), kneecap luxation and hearing loss may also be seen, and because of a narrow pelvis, cesarean births are common. A cool environment and eye care are important. The Boston Terrier is ideal for individuals and families looking for a friendly, adaptable, apartment-friendly companion.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
