Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and powerful body, with a characteristic bushy beard and eyebrows. Its harsh, wiry, thick double coat gives it a rugged look; it needs regular grooming but sheds little.

Temperament and Personality

The Bouvier is loyal, calm and self-confident. It is devoted to its family, protective of and gentle with children. It has a natural guarding instinct but is balanced and controlled. It is intelligent and eager to work; it is wary of strangers.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its thick wiry coat needs regular brushing and periodic grooming/trimming. It needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. It is intelligent and trainable; early socialization and consistent training are important because of its strength and guarding instinct.

Health

It is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV), eye problems (glaucoma) and aortic stenosis may occur. Responsible breeding and regular check-ups are recommended. The Bouvier suits experienced owners looking for a loyal, balanced and hardworking dog who can devote time to exercise and training.
