About the Breed

Origin and History

The Brabançon (Petit Brabançon) is the smooth-coated member of the Brussels Griffon family, developed from small dogs that Belgian coachmen used to keep their stables free of rodents. Over time it became a charming companion dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, compact body, an expressive, almost human-like face and a slightly flattened (brachycephalic) muzzle. Its short, straight, glossy coat is easy to care for and sheds little.

Temperament and Personality

The Brabançon is affectionate, intelligent and deeply devoted to people. It sticks to its owner "like a shadow", craves attention and does not like being left alone. Curious, playful and sensitive, it is a comical companion full of character. It may be wary of strangers.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to maintain. Low to moderate exercise is enough, but because of its flat face extra care is needed in very hot weather. Its sensitive nature calls for gentle, reward-based training; house training may require patience.

Health

Due to its flat-faced structure, brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) may occur. Eye problems, patellar luxation and syringomyelia have also been reported. A cool environment and regular check-ups are important. The Brabançon suits individuals and families looking for an affectionate, characterful, people-loving small companion and who can devote plenty of time to it.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
