About the Breed
Origin and History
The Bullmastiff was developed in England by crossing the bulldog and the mastiff to protect gamekeepers from poachers. It is a guardian with the strength and courage to approach silently and pin an intruder to the ground, yet it is not aggressive.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, extremely muscular and powerful body, a broad head and a slightly flattened face. Its short, dense coat comes in fawn, red or brindle with a black mask and is easy to care for.
Temperament and Personality
The Bullmastiff is calm, loyal and self-confident. It is deeply devoted to its family, patient and protective with children. It is a brave but balanced guardian and does not bark needlessly. It is a low-energy, dignified housemate, though it has a stubborn streak.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to maintain; it may drool. Low to moderate exercise is enough. Because of its strength, early socialization and consistent, calm training are essential. Due to its flat face, extra care is needed in very hot weather.
Health
Hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV, bloat), cancer (lymphoma), which is relatively common in the breed, and eyelid problems (entropion) may occur in the Bullmastiff. Its giant size is linked to a short lifespan. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Bullmastiff suits experienced, responsible owners looking for a calm, loyal and powerful guardian who can manage its strength.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
