About the Breed

Origin and History

The Burmilla appeared by chance in England in 1981: the elegant kittens born from an unplanned mating between a Burmese female and a Chinchilla Persian male were so admired that it was decided to develop them as a breed. Its name combines the words "Burmese" and "Chinchilla."

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, elegant yet muscular body. Its most distinctive feature is its shimmering coat, with colored tips ("tipped" or "shaded") on a silver or golden base. The dark lines around its eyes, nose and lips give it an almost "made-up" expression. It is usually shorthaired; a semi-longhaired variety also exists.

Personality and Temperament

The Burmilla strikes a balanced blend of the Burmese's sociability and the Persian's calmness. It has an affectionate temperament, attached to its people but not overly demanding. It stays playful into adulthood, is curious and adapts easily to family life. It is an easygoing housemate that gets along well with children and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Brushing once a week for shorthaired cats and a few times a week for semi-longhaired ones is enough; the silky coat is easy to maintain. A balanced diet and regular play support its health.

Health

The Burmilla is generally a healthy breed, but one inherited risk from its Persian ancestry deserves attention: polycystic kidney disease (PKD), linked to the PKD1 gene. This condition can be screened for with a reliable DNA test and reduced through responsible breeding. Regular monitoring of kidney function is also recommended for some individuals. General veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are important.

Who Is It Right For?

The Burmilla is ideal for individuals and families looking for an affectionate yet balanced cat that is neither overly active nor too passive. Its adaptable nature, enjoying both play and calm, lets it settle easily into many homes.
