About the Breed
Origin and History
The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds, developed in Scotland to flush out rodents and quarry hiding among piles of stones (cairns). It became world-famous through the character Toto in the film "The Wizard of Oz".
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, sturdy and athletic body. It has a harsh, wiry, weather-resistant outer coat of medium length and a soft undercoat; it comes in a variety of colors and sheds little.
Temperament and Personality
The Cairn Terrier is brave, energetic and friendly. It has typical terrier determination; it is curious, playful and bold. It is a family-loving companion that gets along well with children. Its prey drive is strong and it tends to bark and dig.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its wiry coat is maintained with weekly brushing and periodic hand-stripping; it sheds little. It needs moderate exercise and play. It is intelligent but independent; reward-based training and early socialization are important.
Health
It is generally robust. Patellar luxation, portosystemic shunt affecting the liver, cataracts and, rarely, inherited globoid cell leukodystrophy (Krabbe disease — a DNA test is available) may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Cairn Terrier suits families and active individuals looking for a brave, energetic and friendly small dog.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
