About the Breed

Origin and History

The California Spangled was developed in the United States in the 1980s by screenwriter Paul Casey to draw attention to the hunting of wild spotted cats. The goal was to create the look of a wild leopard in a fully domestic cat. It contains no wild cat DNA; it was produced solely by crossing selected domestic breeds. It became famous after being featured in a department store catalog in 1986, but because very few were ever bred, it is extremely rare today.

Appearance and Coat

It has a long, muscular and athletic body; its low-slung stance and movements recall a wild hunter. Its most distinctive features are the bold spotted (spangled) pattern covering its body and its short, soft coat. The spots can be round, square or triangular and create a high-contrast look.

Personality and Temperament

Despite its wild appearance, the California Spangled is extremely affectionate, social and attached to its people. It is energetic and athletic; it loves climbing, jumping and games that satisfy its hunting instinct. It is intelligent and open to training. It forms a strong bond with its owner and wants interaction and play; it is happiest in an active household.

Care and Nutrition

Its short coat is very easy to care for; brushing once a week is enough. Its real need is plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation: tall climbing spaces, interactive toys and regular play are recommended. A balanced, protein-rich diet suits its athletic build.

Health

Because the California Spangled is not a wild cat hybrid and was developed from healthy domestic breeds, it is generally considered robust; it has no known serious breed-specific inherited disease. However, as an extremely rare breed with a limited gene pool, responsible breeding is important. As with all cats, regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations and a balanced diet are essential for a long life.

Who Is It Right For?

The California Spangled is ideal for individuals and families looking for an affectionate, active companion with an exotic look, who can offer it plenty of play and interaction. As it is a rare breed, those hoping to adopt one may need to be patient.
