About the Breed

Origin and History

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was developed in Wales for driving cattle and is the older of the two Corgi breeds. Unlike the Pembroke, it has a long, fox-like tail. Its short legs helped it avoid the cattle's kicks.

Appearance and Coat

It has a long body, short legs and a sturdy build, with large ears and a long tail. Its medium-length, water-resistant double coat comes in many colors (including merle); it sheds moderately to heavily.

Temperament and Personality

The Cardigan Corgi is intelligent, loyal and adaptable. It is devoted to its family, gets along well with children and is eager to work. Alert, it makes a good watchdog; because of its herding instinct it may show herding and barking tendencies. It is somewhat calmer and more reserved than the Pembroke.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its double coat should be brushed a few times a week. It needs moderate to high exercise, but jumping and stairs should be limited and an ideal weight maintained for spinal health. It is intelligent and trainable; early socialization is important.

Health

Because of its long body, back/disc herniation (IVDD) and obesity are the main concerns. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — a DNA test is available) and hip dysplasia may also occur. An ideal weight and protecting the spine are important. The Cardigan Corgi suits families looking for an intelligent, loyal and active dog.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
