About the Breed
Origin and History
The Caucasian Ovcharka (Caucasian Shepherd Dog) is a giant livestock guardian developed in the Caucasus Mountains to protect flocks from wolves and other predators. Over the centuries it evolved into a brave guardian capable of making independent decisions.
Appearance and Coat
It has a massive, muscular, heavy-boned body. Its thick, long double coat protects it from the cold; it sheds heavily and needs regular grooming. Its large head and imposing stance make it a strong deterrent.
Temperament and Personality
The Caucasian Ovcharka is loyal, brave and extremely protective. It bonds strongly with its family and territory and is highly wary and aloof with strangers. It is independent and makes its own decisions, which is part of its livestock-guarding instinct. Calm, yet fearless when needed.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its thick coat needs regular brushing, more often during shedding seasons. It needs moderate exercise. Because of its strong guarding instinct, early and extensive socialization and consistent training are essential; it requires experience and firm leadership and is not suitable for first-time dog owners.
Health
It is generally hardy, but due to its giant size hip/elbow dysplasia, obesity and heart problems may occur. Controlled feeding during puppyhood is important for joint development. The Caucasian Ovcharka suits experienced, responsible owners looking for a powerful guard dog who can provide ample space and extensive socialization.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
