About the Breed

Origin and History

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed in America to retrieve ducks from the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Its water-repellent, oily coat and powerful build allow it to work in the toughest water conditions; it is a hardy and determined gun dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and powerful body. Its most distinctive feature is its waterproof, oily-textured, slightly wavy double coat in "deadgrass", brown and sedge shades. It may have a noticeable odor and sheds moderately to heavily.

Temperament and Personality

The Chesapeake is loyal, intelligent and self-confident. It bonds strongly with its family but is more independent and protective than other retrievers, and wary of strangers. It has very high energy and a strong working drive, and loves water.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its oily coat should be cared for with regular brushing and without over-bathing (the oil layer must be preserved). It needs a great deal of exercise, especially swimming. It is intelligent but independent; consistent, reward-based training and early socialization are important.

Health

Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — a DNA test is available) and degenerative myelopathy (a DNA test is available) may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Chesapeake suits experienced owners looking for an active, water-loving and loyal dog who can give it intensive exercise.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
