About the Breed
Origin and History
The Chihuahua, which comes from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, is the world's smallest dog breed. Its origins are traced back to ancient Mexican civilizations. Despite its tiny size, it has a big personality and plenty of courage.
Appearance and Coat
It has a very small, delicate body, a characteristic "apple head" and large erect ears. It comes in both short-haired and long-haired varieties and in many colors. It sheds little.
Temperament and Personality
The Chihuahua is lively, brave and extremely devoted to its owner; it often bonds strongly with one person. Alert and prone to barking, it makes a good "alarm" dog. Despite its tiny size it is fearless; it may be wary of strangers and large dogs. It seeks warmth and loves to snuggle.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its coat is easy to care for. Little exercise is needed, but mental stimulation is important. Because of its small size it is sensitive to cold. Early socialization and consistent training prevent excessive barking and "small dog syndrome" behaviors; dental health deserves special attention.
Health
As is typical of small breeds, patellar luxation, an open fontanelle in the skull (molera), fluid build-up in the brain (hydrocephalus), heart disease (MVD), dental disease and hypoglycemia in puppies may occur. Regular dental and heart check-ups are recommended. The Chihuahua suits individuals looking for an affectionate, brave and people-loving tiny companion.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
