About the Breed
Origin and History
The Chow Chow is one of China's oldest dog breeds; in the past it was used as a guard, hunting and draft dog. Its blue-black tongue and lion-like mane make it unique, and its history goes back thousands of years.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, muscular, upright body with a characteristic thick mane and a stilted, straight-legged gait. Its dense, fluffy, long double coat (there is also a smooth-coated variety) needs regular grooming and sheds heavily. Its most distinctive feature is its blue-black tongue.
Temperament and Personality
The Chow Chow is independent, dignified and loyal, with a cat-like, aloof character. It is devoted to its family but not overly demonstrative; it is wary of strangers and protective. It is calm, serious and self-confident.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its thick coat needs regular (frequent) brushing to prevent matting; it sheds heavily. Low to moderate exercise is enough. Because of its independent and stubborn nature, early socialization and patient, consistent training are essential.
Health
Hip/elbow dysplasia, inward-rolling eyelids (entropion), hypothyroidism and heat sensitivity related to its slightly flattened face may occur in the Chow Chow. Regular eye and general check-ups are important. The Chow Chow suits experienced owners looking for an independent, calm and loyal dog who can make time for grooming and early socialization.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
