About the Breed
Origin and History
The Cockapoo, created by crossing the Cocker Spaniel with the Poodle, is one of the oldest designer dogs. It combines the Cocker's cheerful affection with the Poodle's intelligence and low-shedding coat. As a crossbreed, its traits can vary.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, cute and well-balanced body. Its coat is usually soft, wavy or curly and sheds little; it comes in a variety of colors. It needs regular grooming and clipping.
Temperament and Personality
The Cockapoo is cheerful, affectionate and extremely sociable. It is people-oriented and gets along very well with children and other animals. Playful, intelligent and trainable, it does not like being left alone and needs attention.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its soft coat needs regular brushing and periodic clipping to prevent matting; it sheds little. It needs moderate to high exercise and play. Intelligent and eager to please, it responds excellently to reward-based training.
Health
As a crossbreed, it may carry the predispositions of its parent breeds: ear infections (due to drooping ears), patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and hip dysplasia. Regular ear care is recommended. The Cockapoo is ideal for families looking for a cheerful, sociable and low-shedding companion.
