About the Breed
Origin and History
The Coonhound (Black and Tan Coonhound) is a scent hound developed in America to hunt raccoons and other game by following their scent. It tracks with its nose close to the ground and is a hardy, persistent trailer.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular and athletic body with long, drooping ears. Its short, dense coat is usually black and tan; it is easy to care for and sheds moderately.
Personality and Temperament
The Coonhound is friendly, loyal and warm-hearted, and gets along well with the family. It has a strong scenting instinct and a determined nature; once it picks up a trail, it is hard to distract. It is known for its characteristic deep, melodic "bay" and tends to be vocal. A calm housemate indoors, it is a determined hunter outdoors.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to maintain; the drooping ears should be cleaned regularly. It needs plenty of exercise and scent stimulation, and a secure, fenced area is a must because of its strong prey drive. Its trail-focused nature calls for patient, reward-based training.
Health
It is generally a hardy breed. Hip dysplasia, ear infections, gastric torsion (GDV) and eye problems may occur. Regular ear care and veterinary check-ups are recommended. The Coonhound suits active owners looking for a determined, friendly and loyal hunting/companion dog who can offer plenty of exercise and space.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
