About the Breed

Origin and History

The Curly-Coated Retriever is one of the oldest retriever breeds, developed in England to retrieve game on both water and land. Its unique curly coat protects it from water and thorny terrain, making it a hardy and versatile gun dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, athletic and elegant body. Its most distinctive feature is the coat of tight, small curls covering the body; it comes in black or liver, sheds little and requires different care from other retrievers.

Personality and Temperament

The Curly-Coated Retriever is intelligent, self-confident and more independent than other retrievers. It is loyal to its family but reserved with strangers. It loves water, is eager to work and has great stamina. It has a calm yet active, well-balanced temperament.

Care, Exercise and Training

The curly coat is cared for by dampening rather than excessive brushing, so the curls are preserved. It needs a very high level of exercise, especially swimming. Intelligent but independent, it benefits from consistent, reward-based training and early socialization.

Health

Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — DNA test available), gastric torsion (GDV) and glycogen storage disease seen in the breed (GSD IIIa — DNA test available) may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Curly-Coated Retriever suits experienced owners looking for an active, intelligent, water-loving dog who can give it plenty of exercise.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
