About the Breed

Origin and History

The Cyprus cat (also known as the Aphrodite) is a native breed that has lived naturally on the island of Cyprus for thousands of years. Archaeological findings show that some of the earliest examples of human-cat companionship come from this island. It developed through natural selection in the island's mountainous and coastal regions and, since it is not the product of any artificial breeding program, it is considered a "natural breed."

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, long-legged, muscular and athletic body; its powerful build is adapted to mountain conditions. Both shorthaired and semi-longhaired individuals exist; the coat is fine and silky, and denser in the mountain type. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns.

Personality and Temperament

The Cyprus cat is loyal, social and attached to its people. It is intelligent and active; it loves climbing, exploring and playing. While it keeps the independent streak that comes from life in the wild, it bonds strongly with its family and seeks interaction. Its adaptable nature helps it fit in well with family life and other animals; it can be communicative.

Care and Nutrition

Depending on coat length, brushing once or twice a week is enough; a little more often is recommended for semi-longhaired cats. As a hardy, natural breed, it has no special requirements. Plenty of play, climbing space and a balanced diet are recommended to support its active nature.

Health

Having developed on the island through natural selection, the Cyprus cat has a sound genetic makeup. It has no known serious breed-specific inherited disease and is considered one of the hardiest natural breeds. As with all cats, regular vaccinations, parasite protection, dental care and veterinary check-ups are important for a long, healthy life.

Who Is It Right For?

The Cyprus cat is ideal for individuals and families looking for a hardy, loyal and active companion. Thanks to its natural, adaptable nature it fits many lifestyles; it is happiest in homes that can offer it play and interaction.
