About the Breed
Origin and History
The Dalmatian traces its origins to the Dalmatia region of Croatia and became famous in the past as a "carriage dog" that accompanied horse-drawn carriages. It is known for its endurance and athleticism and has also become an icon as the firehouse dog.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-to-large, muscular and athletic body. Its most distinctive feature is its unique pattern of round black or liver spots on a white background. Puppies are born white, and the spots appear later. Its short coat sheds year-round.
Personality and Temperament
The Dalmatian is energetic, loyal and friendly. It is devoted to its owner, playful with children and sociable. It has very high energy and gets bored if its mental and physical needs are not met. It is intelligent but has an independent side; it is alert and makes a good watchdog.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to care for but sheds constantly. It has a very high need for exercise and running. Intelligent but independent, it benefits from early socialization and consistent, reward-based training.
Health
The most important hereditary issue in the Dalmatian is congenital deafness; it is relatively common in the breed, and a hearing test (BAER) is recommended for puppies. Due to a difference in uric acid metabolism, there is also a risk of urinary tract/urate stones (DNA test available); plenty of water and an appropriate diet are protective. Skin allergies may also occur. The Dalmatian suits active families looking for a very active, friendly and hardy dog who can give it plenty of exercise.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
