About the Breed

Origin and History

The Donskoy (also known as the Don Sphynx) appeared in 1987 in the Russian city of Rostov with a hairless cat found on the street. Unlike in the Sphynx, the genetics behind its hairlessness involve a dominant gene; for this reason the two breeds are genetically distinct. The Donskoy was later also used in developing breeds such as the Peterbald.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, muscular body, almond-shaped eyes and large ears. Its most distinctive feature is its warm, soft-textured, wrinkled hairless (or very fine, peach-fuzz-like) skin. The degree of hairlessness varies from cat to cat; some are completely bare, while others carry a fine fuzz. The skin has difficulty retaining body heat.

Personality and Temperament

The Donskoy is social, intelligent and very devoted to people. Because it seeks warmth, it loves snuggling up to its owner, climbing into laps and sleeping under blankets. It is playful and curious and wants interaction; it does not like being left alone. It has an outgoing character and is attached to its family.

Care and Nutrition

Hairless skin requires special care: regular (weekly) baths to prevent skin oil buildup, ear cleaning and hygiene of skin folds are essential. It must be protected from sunburn, cold and excessive heat and kept warm. Since it spends a lot of energy maintaining its body temperature, a balanced and sufficient diet is important.

Health

The Donskoy is generally robust, but some issues related to hairlessness need attention. In connection with the hairlessness gene, some individuals may have dental development problems and skin sensitivity; the gene affecting ectodermal structures can affect dental and skin health together. In addition, because of its difficulty regulating body temperature, attention should be paid to ambient temperature. Regular veterinary check-ups, dental care and skin monitoring are recommended.

Who Is It Right For?

The Donskoy suits individuals and families looking for a warm, people-loving companion who can devote care to intensive skin maintenance and a warm home environment. It is not suitable for those wanting a low-maintenance pet.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
