About the Breed
Origin and History
The English Mastiff is a giant breed whose origins date back to antiquity, used for war, protection and guarding. Today it is recognized as one of the largest dogs in the world by weight; its strength is balanced by a calm temperament.
Appearance and Coat
It has an enormous, extremely muscular and heavy-boned body, a broad head and a slightly flat face. Its short, dense coat comes in fawn, apricot or brindle with a black mask; it is easy to care for, but the dog drools.
Personality and Temperament
The English Mastiff is calm, gentle and loyal. Despite its enormous size, it is soft-hearted; it is devoted to its family and patient and protective with children. It is a natural guardian but not aggressive; it has a dignified and balanced temperament.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to care for; skin folds and drool should be cleaned. Low to moderate exercise is enough, but excessive exertion should be avoided during puppyhood for healthy joint development. Because of its strength, early socialization and calm, consistent training are essential.
Health
Because of its giant size, hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV), heart disease (cardiomyopathy) and cancer may occur; eyelid problems and heat sensitivity are also possible. Its short lifespan is linked to its giant size. The English Mastiff suits owners looking for a calm, loyal, giant guardian who can provide plenty of space and health monitoring.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
