About the Breed

Origin and History

The English Setter is an elegant gun dog developed in England for bird hunting, to find game and indicate it by "setting" (crouching to point). With its gentle temperament and beautiful appearance, it is a breed loved both in the field and at home.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, elegant and athletic body. Its silky, medium-long, slightly wavy coat forms abundant "feathering" on the legs and tail, and it bears the characteristic speckled ("belton") pattern. It requires regular grooming.

Personality and Temperament

The English Setter is extremely friendly, gentle and sociable. It is very people-oriented and gets along wonderfully with children and other animals; it is not prone to aggression. It strikes a balance between energetic and calm; it is sensitive and responsive.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its silky coat needs regular brushing and periodic grooming. It needs plenty of exercise and loves running in the field. It is eager to please but sensitive, so it requires gentle, reward-based training.

Health

It is generally a healthy breed. Hip dysplasia, congenital deafness and hypothyroidism may occur. A hearing test for puppies and regular check-ups are recommended. The English Setter is ideal for families looking for a friendly, gentle and active family dog who can devote time to coat care and exercise.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
