English Springer Spaniel

Origin and History

The English Springer Spaniel is an agile gun dog developed in England to flush ("spring") game out of the undergrowth. With its work ethic, scenting ability and cheerful temperament, it is loved today both in the field and at home, and it is also used as a detection dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, athletic and well-balanced body with long, drooping ears. Its medium-length, silky, slightly wavy coat forms feathering on the ears and legs; it is usually black and white or liver and white.

Personality and Temperament

The English Springer is friendly, energetic and extremely sociable. It is very people-oriented and gets along well with children and other animals. It is eager to please, cheerful and exuberant, and does not like being left alone. It has very high energy and a strong hunting instinct.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its coat needs regular brushing; the drooping ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infection. It needs a very high level of exercise. It is intelligent and trainable, and responds excellently to reward-based training.

Health

Hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and PFK deficiency (DNA test available) may occur. A behavioral "rage syndrome" has rarely been reported in some lines; responsible breeding is important. The English Springer is ideal for active families looking for a friendly, active and trainable family dog who can give it plenty of exercise.
