Entlebucher Mountain Dog

Origin and History

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog (Entlebucher Sennenhund) was developed in Switzerland's Entlebuch valley for driving cattle and is the smallest and most agile of the four Swiss mountain dogs. It is a hard-working, hardy and energetic dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, muscular and agile body. Its short, dense and glossy coat has the characteristic tricolor (black/tan/white) pattern; it is easy to care for and sheds moderately.

Personality and Temperament

The Entlebucher is energetic, intelligent and loyal to its family. It is eager to work, athletic and self-confident, with a strong herding instinct. It is sociable but wary of strangers; it is alert and a good watchdog. It needs mental and physical stimulation.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for. It has a very high need for exercise and a "job" to do. It is intelligent and trainable; early socialization and consistent training are important because of its herding instinct.

Health

It is generally a hardy breed. Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and, in some lines, hemolytic conditions may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Entlebucher suits active owners looking for an active, intelligent and loyal dog who can offer it plenty of exercise and work.
