About the Breed
Origin and History
Despite its name, the American Eskimo Dog descends from the German Spitz line, which originated in Germany. It was developed in America and was once featured as a performing dog in circuses. It comes in three sizes (toy, miniature and standard).
Appearance and Coat
It has a compact, well-balanced and striking body, erect ears and a fox-like face. Its dense, fluffy, long double coat is pure white or biscuit cream; it sheds heavily and needs regular grooming.
Personality and Temperament
The American Eskimo Dog is extremely intelligent, alert and affectionate. It is devoted to its family, eager to please and easy to train. It is watchful and tends to bark, making it a good watchdog. It may be wary of strangers and needs mental stimulation.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its dense double coat needs regular brushing; it sheds heavily. It needs moderate to high exercise and mental stimulation. Thanks to its exceptional intelligence, it excels at learning tricks and commands; early socialization helps balance its barking.
Health
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — DNA test available), patellar luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (a femoral head disorder) and hip dysplasia may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The American Eskimo Dog suits families looking for an intelligent, trainable and affectionate dog who can devote time to coat care and mental stimulation.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
