About the Breed

Origin and History

The Flat-Coated Retriever is an elegant retriever breed developed in England to retrieve game on both water and land. Because it keeps its puppy energy and cheerful temperament for life, it is nicknamed the "Peter Pan" of dogs.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, athletic and elegant body. Its flat, glossy, medium-long coat comes in black or liver and forms feathering on the legs and tail. It sheds moderately and needs regular grooming.

Personality and Temperament

The Flat-Coated Retriever is extremely friendly, cheerful and energetic. It is deeply devoted to people, gets along wonderfully with children and other animals, and is not prone to aggression. Exuberant and playful, it stays a puppy at heart even in adulthood. It loves to please.

Care, Exercise and Training

The coat needs regular brushing. It requires a very high level of exercise, especially running and swimming. Intelligent and trainable, its exuberance should be channeled through patient, reward-based training and early socialization.

Health

In the Flat-Coated Retriever, cancer (especially histiocytic sarcoma) is relatively common in the breed and is the main reason for its short lifespan. Hip dysplasia and eye problems may also occur. Responsible breeding and regular check-ups are important. The Flat-Coated Retriever suits active families looking for a friendly, energetic and cheerful family dog who can give it plenty of exercise.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
