Origin and History
The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in Germany as a versatile hunting dog able to find, point and retrieve game on both land and water. Thanks to its athleticism and intelligence, it stands out today in hunting, dog sports and search and rescue.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, athletic and muscular body. Its short, dense, water-repellent coat comes in "liver" (brown) and ticked/spotted patterns; it is easy to care for and sheds little.
Personality and Temperament
The German Pointer is friendly, intelligent and extremely energetic. It is devoted to people, gets along well with children and loves to please. It has very high energy and a strong prey drive; it gets bored if its need for mental and physical stimulation is not met. It is athletic and eager to work.
Care, Exercise and Training
The short coat is easy to maintain. It has a very high need for exercise; long runs and activity every day are required. Intelligent and trainable, it is ideal for dog sports and responds excellently to reward-based training.
Health
It is generally robust and athletic. Hip dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV), von Willebrand disease and eye problems may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The German Pointer is ideal for active owners looking for a very active, intelligent and trainable dog who can provide intense exercise; it is not suited to a sedentary lifestyle.
