About the Breed

Origin and History

The Giant Schnauzer is the largest member of the Schnauzer family, developed in Germany for driving cattle, guarding farms and later for police work. It is a strong, intelligent and versatile working dog.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and powerful body with a characteristic bushy beard and eyebrows. Its harsh, wiry double coat is black or "pepper and salt"; it sheds little but needs regular brushing and periodic grooming/clipping.

Personality and Temperament

The Giant Schnauzer is intelligent, loyal and self-confident. It bonds strongly with its family and has a natural protective instinct; it is wary of strangers. It is eager to work, has high energy and a strong personality, and needs mental stimulation.

Care, Exercise and Training

The wiry coat needs regular brushing and periodic hand-stripping/clipping; it sheds little. It requires a very high level of exercise and mental stimulation. It is intelligent and trainable, but because of its strong personality, early socialization, experience and consistent training are essential.

Health

Hip dysplasia, eye problems, hypothyroidism and cancers seen in the breed (especially of the toes/melanoma) may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Giant Schnauzer suits experienced owners looking for an intelligent, loyal and hardworking dog who can devote time to exercise, training and socialization.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
