About the Breed
Origin and History
The Gordon Setter was developed in Scotland for bird hunting and is the largest and strongest member of the setter family. It takes its name from Gordon Castle. It is known for its stamina, loyalty and black-and-tan appearance.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular and well-balanced body. Its silky, medium-long, slightly wavy coat carries rust-tan markings on a glossy black base; it forms feathering on the legs and tail and requires regular grooming.
Personality and Temperament
The Gordon Setter is loyal, intelligent and extremely devoted to its family; it can form a strong bond with one person. It is a people-loving dog that gets along well with children. It is somewhat more serious and protective than other setters and has high energy and a strong prey drive.
Care, Exercise and Training
The silky coat needs regular brushing, and the ears should be cleaned. It requires plenty of exercise. Intelligent and trainable but with an independent streak, it needs patient, reward-based training.
Health
Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — a DNA test is available), gastric torsion (GDV) and hypothyroidism may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Gordon Setter suits active owners looking for a loyal, intelligent and active hunting/family dog who can devote time to coat care and exercise.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
