About the Breed

Origin and History

The Ibizan Hound (Podenco Ibicenco) is a sighthound of ancient origin used for rabbit hunting on the Spanish island of Ibiza. It hunts by sight, scent and hearing, and is an agile breed with an extraordinary ability to jump.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, slender, long-legged and elegant body with striking large upright ears. Its short (or wire) coat comes in red-and-white shades; it is easy to care for and sheds little.

Personality and Temperament

The Ibizan Hound is independent, intelligent and friendly; it is attached to its family but somewhat reserved. It is athletic and energetic and, with its extraordinary jumping ability, can clear high fences. It has a strong prey drive and is sensitive.

Care, Exercise and Training

The short coat is easy to maintain. It requires a very high level of exercise; because of its jumping ability, a very high and secure fence is essential. Its independent and sensitive nature calls for gentle, patient training.

Health

It is generally a robust and hardy breed. Sensitivity to anesthesia, typical of sighthounds, and occasionally seizures may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Ibizan Hound suits owners looking for an athletic, independent and friendly dog who can provide a very secure space and plenty of exercise.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
