Rajapalayam

Origin and History

The Indian Rajapalayam is a noble sighthound bred in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu for wild boar hunting and guarding. Known for its white coat and imposing stance, it is a long-established breed once prized by kings.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular, long-legged and deep-chested athletic body. Its very short, fine coat is usually pure white (with a pink nose and golden eyes); it sheds very little and is very easy to care for.

Temperament and Personality

The Rajapalayam is loyal, brave and independent. It bonds strongly with its family but is extremely wary of strangers; it has both hunting and guarding instincts. Fast, agile and determined, it shows a reserved character devoted to a single family.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat requires almost no grooming. It needs a great deal of exercise and off-leash running; because of its strong prey drive, a safe, fenced area is essential. Its independent nature calls for early socialization and patient, experienced training.

Health

It is a hardy breed that developed under natural conditions. In connection with the white coat, hereditary deafness may occur in some individuals; like other sighthounds, it may also be sensitive to anesthesia. Hearing tests are recommended. The Rajapalayam suits people looking for a fast, loyal and protective dog who can offer a safe area and experienced ownership.
